More persons click on benefits higher upward from the search rankings, yadda yadda yadda. But The search engines is just not the only player in town, and today Msn is giving you additionally incentive to help clamber as high as you possibly can proceed.
In a recent blog post on Bing's Search Quality Insights Blog, Dr Ronny Kohavi, a 'Partner Architect' at the search engine, revealed some illuminating statistics, and gave SEO professionals a peek at the future of Bing.
According to Kohavi, Bing's data shows that more than half of all users click the first result on the page when they search. By the third result click-through rates are already down as low 6%, and this drop off continues rapidly until less than 1% of searchers are clicking the eighth result on the first search page.
These figures provide a stark enough picture in and of themselves - if you want to get hits on Bing you need to be in the top three, preferably right at the very top in pole position. But in the post, entitled 'Ten Blue Links No More: Dynamic Page Sizing', Kohavi reveals another reason for aiming to be top of the pops.
Dynamic page sizing
Dynamic page sizing is the latest concept that Bing is toying - and already experimenting - with. Kohavi explains that often click through rates on the first ten results sometimes decline so dramatically that in some instances it doesn't necessarily make sense to display so many.
This led to a change to Bing in the US in 2012, where only eight results were initially displayed on the page, but then when the user clicked the back button this was expanded to 12. The logic behind this being that users apparently look lower down after they've clicked the back button. But it seems that Bing's first page results could soon be shrinking further.
"Are there cases where the click-through rates decline so quickly, that it's not even worth showing even eight results?" Kohavi muses. "Does one really need to see eight results for the common query 'eBay?'" He goes on to say that Bing has experimented with displaying only four results in some cases, and that, "these are our first steps in dynamically sizing the page."
So, it seems, when carrying out SEO for Bing there could soon be one very big reason for making sure your page is at the very top of the SERPs.
